The Swiss National Park (SNP) was founded in 1914 and is the oldest national park in the Alps and at the same time the only wilderness area with the highest conservation status in Switzerland. From the beginning, SNP was a important promotor for nature conservation and today has become a well known voice in conservation space.
The National Park is home to a impressive variety of alpine plants and animals, such as chamois, deer and marmots but is also known for his extraordinary research record, featuring more than 2000 scientific publications over the last 100 years. This long-term research, documenting changes in the park since 1920, is of particular importance and contributes significantly to the understanding of natural processes in the entire alpine region.
In 2021, the Swiss National Park has been accepted on the IUCN Green List of best governed protected areas in the world. SNP was certified against 17 criteria in four areas: good governance, robust design and planning, effective management and effective conservation outcomes and fully reached all identicators. The Swiss National Park is now the first Green List site in Switzerland.
